Abstract

This paper proposes an interdisciplinary analytical framework — “The Political Economy of Cognitive Bandwidth” — aimed at explaining the underlying mechanisms of belief systems, power structures, and social stratification in human civilization. The core argument is that the power structure of human civilization is fundamentally a problem of cognitive bandwidth allocation — whoever occupies more people’s cognitive bandwidth holds power.

This paper integrates research findings from evolutionary psychology, cognitive neuroscience, social psychology, political sociology, religious economics, and information science to construct a complete causal chain from neurons to the history of civilization. The framework comprises eight core modules: faith as the only thing humans are willing to die for that is entirely externally inputted; a spectrum model of human domesticability (with autism spectrum and psychopathy spectrum as boundary cases); a four-layer multiplicative model of cognitive bandwidth determinants (hardware layer × biochemical layer × psychological state layer × social context layer); the structural benefit asymmetry between faith producers and consumers; cognitive and institutional mechanisms of social stratification; the structural inevitability of autocracy and the evolution of cultural hegemony; the illusory truth effect as the operational formula of cultural hegemony; and the expansion trend of the faith market in an age of accelerating change.

CHAPTER ONEIntroduction: The Special Status of Faith

1.1 The Spectrum of Things Humans Are Willing to Die For

At the extreme end of the human behavioral spectrum, there is a phenomenon worth contemplating deeply: the things for which humans are willing to sacrifice their immediate interests or even their lives are remarkably few — love, honor, freedom, and faith. Yet when we carefully examine the ontological status of these four, a critical distinction emerges. Love has its hormonal and neurochemical basis (oxytocin, dopamine reward circuits); infants possess an innate attachment instinct. The sense of honor is rooted in the hierarchical intuitions of social primates; even animals defend their dignity. The pursuit of freedom shares evolutionary roots with the stress-escape response found across the animal kingdom. These do not need to be “taught” — they merely need to be awakened.

Faith is fundamentally different. No one is born a Christian, a Muslim, or a Marxist. The specific content of faith — what to believe, how to believe, and why to believe — is almost entirely externally inputted: through family, culture, education, and historical circumstance. Faith is the only thing among those humans are willing to die for whose existence is entirely determined by the external environment.

Love, honor, and freedom are answers that come preloaded with human nature, while faith is a question that comes preloaded with human nature — waiting for an external answer.

1.2 The External Input Nature of Faith: The Natural Experiment of Transracial Adoption

Transracial, transnational adoption cases provide a natural “human experiment” — one that nearly perfectly separates “biological attributes” from “cultural inputs.” A Korean infant adopted by an American Evangelical family grows up believing in Jesus, speaking English, and identifying with American values. His DNA has not changed, but his entire spiritual world — faith, language, value judgments, aesthetics — has been entirely written by the new environment.

Baden’s (2002) Cultural-Racial Identity Model systematically describes this phenomenon. A PMC (2008) review found that transracial adoptees exposed to cultural assimilation environments are more likely to internalize the cultural worldview of their adoptive parents and to identify more with their adoptive parents’ racial group. This finding confirms that faith has no biological foundation — no gene determines whether a person believes in Buddhism or Christianity. Faith is pure “software,” entirely dependent on which “machine” it is installed on to run.

1.3 The Core Paradox and Research Questions

The above analysis gives rise to a profound paradox: the faith for which humans are willing to give their lives may, at its core, be nothing more than a geographic and cultural accident. If a person’s faith would be entirely different had they been born somewhere else, on what basis can they be certain their faith is “correct”? This is what philosophy calls the “geographic argument” — faith may simply be determined by one’s birth zip code.

The “vacancy of faith” is hardwired into human nature, but its content is entirely determined by the external environment. This leads to the core research questions of this paper: If faith is externally written and rewritable, what underlying logic governs the power structures built around it? Who are the producers of faith, who are the consumers, and how do benefits flow between them?

CHAPTER TWOHuman Domesticability: From Binary Judgment to a Spectrum Model

2.1 Systematic Studies of Brainwashing and Thought Reform

Psychiatrist Robert Jay Lifton (1961), in Thought Reform and the Psychology of Totalism, based on interviews with Korean War POWs and Chinese intellectuals, identified eight criteria of thought reform: milieu control, mystical manipulation, demand for purity, cult of confession, sacred science, loading the language, doctrine over person, and dispensing of existence.

A key finding of Lifton’s that is often overlooked: released American POWs who returned to the United States quickly reverted to their original thinking. This demonstrates that brainwashing effects depend on sustained environmental maintenance — once the environment changes, the implanted beliefs begin to loosen. This implies a structural principle: the maintenance of faith requires continuous environmental investment.

Multi-level marketing (MLM) organizations provide more everyday living examples. Their operational logic — environmental isolation → emotional bombardment → repetitive indoctrination → behavioral lock-in — is structurally isomorphic with normal socialization processes at the underlying mechanism level. Cialdini (1984), in Influence, systematically studied six principles of persuasion (reciprocity, commitment and consistency, social proof, liking, authority, scarcity), which are highly systematically applied in cults and MLMs. Festinger (1956), in When Prophecy Fails, documented a shocking phenomenon: when a cult’s doomsday prophecy failed, the followers not only did not abandon their faith but exhibited even more fervent belief — cognitive dissonance did not weaken faith but strengthened it.

2.2 The Biological Analogy of Domestication

The silver fox domestication experiment initiated by Dmitri Belyaev in 1959 in Novosibirsk is the most powerful biological analogy for understanding human domesticability. The experimental method was simple: in each generation, only the most docile 10% were selected as parents for the next generation. Within a few dozen generations, this single behavioral selection criterion completely transformed the species’ appearance (coat color changes, floppy ears, curled tails), physiology (altered reproductive cycles), and behavior (active seeking of human contact).

Richard Wrangham (2019), in The Goodness Paradox, further developed the human self-domestication hypothesis, noting that humans exhibit strikingly similar traits to domesticated animals — reduced cranial and brain volume, neoteny, reduced sexual dimorphism, decreased reactive aggression, and enhanced sociality. This implies that humans as a species may have undergone a process of self-domestication — achieved through the systematic exclusion of aggressive individuals.

2.3 Cross-Cultural Validation of Obedience Experiments

The three classic experiments of social psychology — the Asch conformity experiments (1951–1956), the Milgram obedience experiments (1961–1963), and the Zimbardo Stanford Prison Experiment (1971) — collectively paint a striking picture of human obedience.

Milgram proposed the “agentic state” theory to explain this phenomenon: individuals can switch between two psychological states — the autonomous state (acting based on one’s own values) and the agentic state (viewing oneself as an instrument of another’s will). In the agentic state, the individual’s sense of personal responsibility for their own actions is significantly diminished, with responsibility attributed to the authority figure above. When a confederate pressed the shock button on behalf of the participant, the obedience rate surged from 65% to 92.5% — the more complete the transfer of responsibility, the higher the obedience rate.

Blass’s (2012) cross-cultural comparison confirmed the universality of these findings: replication experiments across 11 countries produced remarkably consistent results (61–66%). Modern replications by Burger (2009) and Dolinski (2017) further showed that even after five decades of cultural change, full obedience rates at the 150-volt threshold remained as high as 65–90%. This makes obedience one of the most robust findings in social psychology.

2.4 The Spectrum Model of Domesticability: Counterexamples and Boundary Conditions

Domesticability is not a binary switch (“humans can be domesticated” vs. “humans cannot be domesticated”) but a continuous spectrum. This refinement is grounded in the following empirical findings.

The Weight Differential of Situational vs. Personality Variables

Research consistently finds that personal variables (personality traits, cognitive ability) have a smaller effect on conformity than situational variables (group size, unanimity, credibility of authority). A 2026 preregistered study by Kobayashi et al. published in Autism Research (30 adults with ASD vs. 30 matched neurotypical controls) found a nuanced result: adults with ASD conformed to a similar degree as neurotypical individuals in preference-rating tasks, but showed significantly reduced conformity in accuracy tasks — driven by a subgroup of 9 who never modified their initial estimates.

Reduced conformity tendencies make individuals with ASD immune to certain dangers of social conformity (such as blindly relying on inaccurate group information or becoming prey to propaganda), but simultaneously cause them to feel isolated and disconnected from their social environment. Without a group, there is no pressure of groupthink, but neither is there the protection of group safety.

Psychopathy Spectrum: Operators of Domestication, Not the Domesticated

Psychopathic individuals constitute the other extreme of the spectrum. They possess “social efficacy” and “stress immunity,” and are not easily influenced by others’ emotional manipulation. But unlike those with ASD — they do not passively ignore social signals but actively exploit them to manipulate others. They are “immune to domestication” while simultaneously being “operators of domestication.” The Dark Triad described by Paulhus & Williams (2002) — narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy — predicts leadership emergence but not leadership effectiveness — precisely the personality profile of the “opinion leaders” in this paper’s framework.

The Physiological Cost of Non-Conformity

Brain imaging studies have revealed a finding of profound theoretical significance: participants who resist group pressure show activation of the amygdala — the brain region associated with negative emotions. This means that non-conformity itself produces physiological psychological distress. Even when one successfully resists domestication, the brain is “paying the price” for it.

2.5 Shifting Focus from “Individual Domestication” to “Situational Domestication”

Since situational variables exert greater influence than personality variables, the core of power structures is not “finding easily domesticated people” but “creating easily domesticating situations.” This shifts the analytical focus from individual differences to institutional design — How are educational systems designed to produce an obedient labor force? How is the information environment structured to maximize conformity effects? How does cultural hegemony perpetuate itself through institutionalization? These questions are developed in subsequent chapters.

CHAPTER THREEA Four-Layer Model of Cognitive Bandwidth Determinants

3.1 The Hardware Layer: Fixed Constraints on an Evolutionary Timescale

The most fundamental constraint on human cognitive bandwidth is the evolutionarily hardwired “hardware.” George Miller (1956) proposed the classic “magical number 7 ± 2,” later revised by Nelson Cowan (2001) to approximately 4 chunks — the true raw capacity of working memory. The theoretical significance of this layer is that a person who is hungry, sleep-deprived, and in a state of chronic inflammation has significantly lower available cognitive bandwidth than their healthy self — making them more susceptible to domestication. Mullainathan & Shafir (2013), in Scarcity, precisely demonstrated the mechanism by which poverty itself taxes bandwidth — poverty does not merely mean a lack of money; it means a lack of cognitive bandwidth. This provides an additional explanatory layer for understanding why impoverished populations are more easily captured by belief systems.

3.3 The Psychological State Layer: Fluctuations on a Minute-to-Month Timescale

Anxiety competes with working memory by flooding it with threat-related thoughts — emotion and working memory share cognitive resources. Depression slows processing speed and reduces motivation to engage in effortful processing. Craving and addictive states occupy cognitive resources, reducing bandwidth available for other tasks. Stereotype threat — when individuals are reminded of their membership in a group tagged by negative stereotypes — leads to reduced cognitive performance, a purely sociopsychological factor that directly taxes bandwidth.

The manipulation strategy of opinion leaders often follows a two-step model: First, manufacture fear or anxiety (Step 1: tax the bandwidth), then provide certainty (Step 2: fill the bandwidth). This explains why propaganda always begins by dramatizing crisis — not because a crisis necessarily exists, but because fear is the most effective bandwidth tax.

3.4 The Social Context Layer: Institutionalized Bandwidth Taxation

The social context layer is the most volatile and most easily manipulated layer of the four-layer model. Unlike the preceding three layers, social context can be consciously designed and deployed — this is precisely the operational interface through which power structures are established and maintained.

Information Overload and Decision Fatigue

The modern information environment is designed around the capabilities of software (unlimited storage, instant retrieval, parallel processing), not the constraints of the human brain (approximately 4 chunks of working memory). This mismatch produces systematic cognitive overload. Research shows that when decision demands accumulate continuously, decision fatigue depletes cognitive resources, causing individuals to rely increasingly on shortcuts — default options, authoritative opinions, group consensus. Decision fatigue is not a sign of laziness but a physiological inevitability when finite cognitive resources are exhausted. A modern person making hundreds of micro-decisions each day has virtually no remaining bandwidth for independent judgment by day’s end — which is precisely why television prime time (evening) and late-night social media push notifications are so effective.

Authority Pressure and the Agentic State

The “agentic state” transition discovered by Milgram is one of the most powerful mechanisms in the social context layer. When an individual perceives a legitimate authority figure, a profound psychological shift occurs — they no longer view themselves as the author of their actions but as an instrument for executing another’s will. In the agentic state, the individual’s moral judgment is “outsourced” to the authority, cognitive load is offloaded, and the sense of responsibility is relieved. This transition is ubiquitous in everyday life: hierarchical compliance in the workplace, acceptance of doctrine in religion, and deference to leaders in politics. The essence of the agentic state is a cognitive bandwidth conservation mechanism — releasing cognitive resources by relinquishing independent judgment. The problem is that this “conservation” simultaneously surrenders control over information quality.

Group Conformity and Social Proof

The Asch experiments demonstrated that even when facing clearly discernible objective facts, 75% of participants conformed at least once. Social proof — “everyone else is doing it, so it’s probably right” — is essentially a cognitive outsourcing strategy. When information is incomplete or complexity exceeds an individual’s processing capacity, referencing others’ behavior is a rational heuristic. But this heuristic, when the information environment is artificially manipulated (fake engagement, astroturfing, fake reviews, algorithmic amplification), transforms from a reasonable shortcut into a systematic vulnerability. The “trending” mechanism on social media industrializes the group conformity effect — by artificially creating the illusion that “most people are paying attention to this,” it forcibly redirects individuals’ attentional bandwidth toward specific content.

The Illusory Truth Effect

The illusory truth effect discovered by Hasher et al. (1977) is the deepest and most difficult-to-defend mechanism in the social context layer. Repetition persuades not through logic but by increasing processing fluency to alter truth perception — the brain equates “easy to process” with “probably true.” The finding by Fazio et al. (2015) is particularly critical: even when participants’ prior knowledge contradicted the repeated statement, repetition still increased perceived truthfulness. This means prior knowledge cannot protect people from the illusory truth effect — education is not an antidote to this mechanism. The significance of this effect for the social context layer is that whoever controls the repetition frequency of information controls the perception of “truth.” Chapter 7 provides a detailed analysis of this mechanism as the operational formula of cultural hegemony.

Cultural Hegemony and Institutionalized Education

If the preceding four factors are the “tactical tools” of the social context layer, then cultural hegemony and institutionalized education are the “strategic infrastructure.” Gramsci’s core insight is that the ruling class maintains power by transforming its own values into everyone’s “common sense” — a long-term, systematic occupation of bandwidth. When a person is immersed in the same value system from kindergarten through university, that system is no longer something they “believe in” but the tool they “think with” — like an operating system for a computer: you cannot use Windows to question Windows. The Prussian-model education system does not produce independent thinkers; it produces a labor force with uniform “cognitive formatting.” This formatting uniformity is itself the deepest-level taxation of cognitive bandwidth by the social context layer — it does not merely occupy your bandwidth but defines what kind of information your bandwidth can process. Chapter 6 provides a detailed analysis of the education system as an institution of domestication.

The key distinction between the social context layer and the preceding three layers is that the “bandwidth taxes” of the hardware, biochemical, and psychological state layers are borne by the individual, while the “bandwidth taxes” of the social context layer are designed. This is why the core of power struggles is not competition for resources but competition for the right to define social context — whoever designs the context determines everyone’s effective cognitive bandwidth.

3.5 The Multiplicative Relationship Among the Four Layers

A core theoretical contribution of this framework is that the relationship among the four layers is multiplicative, not additive. A person who is sleep-deprived (biochemical layer compromised), anxious (psychological state layer compromised), and embedded in an information-overloaded environment (social context layer compromised) experiences an effective cognitive bandwidth reduction that is the product, not the sum, of three factors — each layer acts as an amplifier for the next.

This explains why faith movements most easily erupt under extreme conditions — war, famine, and social upheaval simultaneously attack all four layers. It also explains why the manipulation strategies of cults and MLM organizations typically target multiple layers simultaneously: isolation (severing social support networks), deprivation (reducing sleep and food to lower the biochemical layer’s coefficient), emotional bombardment (first manufacturing anxiety, then providing comfort to manipulate the psychological state layer), and repetitive indoctrination (exploiting the illusory truth effect to attack the social context layer).

CHAPTER FOURThe Evolutionary-Cognitive Foundations of Faith

4.1 Cognitive Science of Religion: The Cognitive By-Product Hypothesis

Over the past two decades, cognitive science has provided a series of important explanations for the origins of religious belief. Pascal Boyer (2001), in Religion Explained, proposed that the generation of religious concepts is a by-product of the brain’s cognitive inference systems. His core argument is highly illuminating: “Having a normal brain does not mean you have religion — it just means you can acquire it — which is something quite different.”

Stewart Guthrie’s (1993) HADD (Hyperactive Agency Detection Device) hypothesis posits that the human brain has an innate tendency to detect “intentional agents” in natural phenomena. Scott Atran (2002) argued from an evolutionary anthropology perspective that religious belief is a cognitive by-product. Daniel Dennett (2006), in Breaking the Spell, advocated for the scientific analysis of religion as a natural phenomenon. Ara Norenzayan (2013), in Big Gods, argued that omniscient, moralized deities are not natural products of human cognition but products of cultural evolution — large-scale cooperative societies require “invisible monitors” to maintain social order.

4.2 The Neurobiological Basis of Uncertainty Anxiety

Anxiety is an evolved survival system — the amygdala’s threat detection mechanism encodes uncertainty as danger to keep human ancestors alive. This trait has been refined through approximately 2.5 million years of evolution. From a neuroscience perspective, uncertainty triggers the amygdala, and amygdala activation in turn suppresses the prefrontal cortex. This creates a vicious cycle: greater uncertainty → greater anxiety → greater suppression of the judgment hardware → greater need for external anchors → greater susceptibility to domestication.

Viktor Frankl (1946), in Man’s Search for Meaning, validated the same thesis from an existentialist perspective: in Nazi concentration camps, those who possessed some kind of meaning framework (faith, sense of mission, hope for the future) had significantly higher survival rates than those who had lost all sense of meaning. Meaning is not a luxury — it is a survival necessity.

4.3 The Constant Demand for Cognitive Anchors

A core argument of this paper is that the human demand for cognitive anchors is not fluctuating but constant. This constancy is rooted in neural architecture itself — the amygdala does not stop encoding uncertainty as a threat because civilization has advanced.

A causal study by Neerdaels et al. (2025) published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology demonstrated for the first time a complete causal chain: anomie (perceiving society as collapsing) → political powerlessness → political uncertainty → increased appeal of authoritarian rule. Individuals with low and unstable self-esteem place their trust and hope in the abilities of a powerful other, thereby preferring autocratic leadership (Schoel et al. 2011). Individuals with high and stable self-esteem tend toward self-determination to improve their situation, thus preferring democratic leadership.

CHAPTER FIVEThe Political Economy of Faith: Asymmetric Benefit Structures

5.1 The Personality Profile of Opinion Leaders: The Dark Triad

Paulhus & Williams (2002) defined the “Dark Triad” — narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy — a cluster of three personality traits. Jonason & Webster (2010) found that the shared variance among the three is best summarized as “social exploitation” — using others for personal gain without regard for consequences. The Dark Triad predicts leadership emergence (being perceived as a leader, being selected for leadership roles) but does not predict leadership effectiveness (actually producing good outcomes for the organization and followers).

Combined with the spectrum model from Section 2.4, psychopathic individuals occupy precisely the “operator” end of the domesticability spectrum — they are not domesticated by others but actively domesticate others. This structurally explains why the apex of belief systems tends to attract individuals with Dark Triad traits.

5.2 Religious Economics: The Supply-and-Demand Model of Faith

Stark & Finke (2000), in Acts of Faith, conceptualized religion as a market. Religious organizations, like businesses, produce “compensators” — plausible explanations for existential insecurities that cannot be empirically verified. Individuals rationally exchange time and commitment for these compensators. The flow of benefits is highly asymmetric: believers contribute tangible resources — time, money, and obedience — and receive unverifiable “compensators” (salvation in the afterlife, blessings in this life). Religious leaders, meanwhile, receive tangible power, wealth, and social status.

The Prosperity Gospel is a contemporary extreme case of this asymmetry. Many who donate to prosperity gospel preachers are fixed-income earners or the poor — they believe that “sowing a seed” will yield a multiplied return. Meanwhile, the preachers accumulate personal fortunes in the hundreds of millions.

5.3 Elite Theory and Benefit Transfer Structures

Vilfredo Pareto’s (1916) theory of elite circulation holds that social and political change is less the product of mass revolution than a cyclical process in which one ruling elite is replaced by another. Political struggle is fundamentally elite-driven, with the masses playing an essentially passive role. Elites maintain vitality and the appearance of social mobility through “co-optation” — absorbing the most talented individuals from the lower strata.

Antonio Gramsci’s (1930s) theory of cultural hegemony further revealed the cultural dimension of benefit transfer: the ruling class maintains power not only through force but by shaping thoughts and beliefs throughout cultural life to “manufacture consent.” “Organic intellectuals” transform hegemonic views into everyone’s “common sense” through prestige and intellectual charisma.

Herman & Chomsky (1988), in Manufacturing Consent, argued that the propaganda function of mass communication media operates through five filters: concentrated ownership, advertising as the primary revenue source, reliance on official information sources, disciplinary flak mechanisms, and ideological control. These filters are so deeply embedded in institutional structures that the outcome of bias becomes the path of least resistance.

5.4 The Complete Chain of Benefit Transfer

Synthesizing the above analyses, benefit transfer within belief systems exhibits a triple asymmetry: cognitive asymmetry (leaders understand manipulative mechanisms; followers do not), personality asymmetry (Dark Triad vs. obedient disposition), and informational asymmetry (monopoly on interpretation vs. filtered information).

The contemporary attention economy perpetuates this ancient structure. Mirghaderi (2022) analyzed the free labor of social media users — followers’ attention, likes, and shares constitute the monetization base for opinion leaders, yet the users themselves receive no compensation. This is structurally isomorphic with the medieval church’s tithe.

CHAPTER SIXThe Underlying Mechanisms of Social Stratification

6.1 Analysis of Resistance to Faith-Based Domestication

At least three layers of “resistance” determine how easily a person is domesticated by a belief system. At the cognitive level, Pennycook et al. (2016), across four empirical studies plus a meta-analysis (N=15,078, k=31), found an overall negative correlation between Cognitive Reflection Test performance and religious belief (r=−.18), with atheists scoring 18.7% higher on a composite index of analytical thinking. However, the large-scale preregistered replication by Sanchez et al. (2017) failed to reproduce the experimental manipulation effect — suggesting that analytical thinking functions as a long-term “immunization mechanism” rather than an instant “antidote.”

At the personality level, Elms & Milgram (1966) found that obedient participants scored higher on the F-scale (measuring authoritarian tendencies). Bond & Smith’s cross-cultural meta-analysis (133 studies, 17 countries) found that individuals from collectivist cultures exhibited more conformity than those from individualist cultures. Notably, conformity rates within the United States have been declining consistently since the 1950s, consistent with the rise of individualist culture. This means a society’s “faith domestication rate” is not constant — it varies with the culture’s emphasis on autonomy.

6.2 The Education System: The Institutionalization of Domestication

After its devastating defeat at the Battle of Jena in 1806, Prussia identified independent thinking and individualist spirit as the root causes of defeat and designed a centralized school system with explicit output goals including: soldiers obedient to the army, workers obedient in mines, factories, and farms, well-trained subordinate civil servants, and national uniformity of thought and expression. John Taylor Gatto put it succinctly: school is not designed to make you capable — it is designed to make you manageable.

Paglayan (2020), in a study published in the American Political Science Review, analyzed 200 years of data and found that compulsory education systems across countries were created or expanded in the aftermath of social upheaval — not to liberate minds but to restore social control. The rise in literacy from 12% in 1820 to 87% in 2024 is a tremendous achievement of human civilization — but the primary beneficiaries of this achievement are, first and foremost, not those who acquired literacy but the opinion producers who can now “push faith products” to them at lower cost.

6.3 Inevitable Stratification Within the Same Education System

A longitudinal study in the United Kingdom spanning 95 years and covering 91,935 individuals (von Stumm et al. 2022) found that the correlation coefficient between family socioeconomic status and children’s school performance was stable at 0.28 — a figure that has barely changed over nearly a century, regardless of educational policy reforms. High-ability children from disadvantaged backgrounds are far less likely to achieve good grades than equally capable children from advantaged backgrounds. Education is not an equalizer; it is a stratification amplifier.

6.4 The Mathematical Upper Bound of Opinion Leaders: Power-Law Distribution

Influence in social networks follows not a normal distribution but a power-law distribution. The preferential attachment mechanism (“the rich get richer”) discovered by Barabási & Albert (1999) causes a tiny minority of nodes to acquire a disproportionate number of connections. Derek de Solla Price’s square root law of elites states that in any field, the number of outstanding contributors is approximately equal to the square root of the total population. If a field has 10,000 researchers, approximately 100 (√10,000) will produce the vast majority of impactful work.

In a society of one hundred million people, the upper bound on “effective opinion leaders” is approximately ten thousand. These ten thousand define the belief framework for the remaining 99,990,000.

CHAPTER SEVENThe Structural Inevitability of Autocracy and the Evolution of Cultural Hegemony

7.1 Autocracy as the Satisfaction of Demand

In 2024, for the first time, the number of autocratic states (91) exceeded the number of democratic ones (88). A Pew Research Center survey across 24 countries found that a median of 31% supported some form of authoritarian governance — ranging from 85% in India to 8% in Sweden.

Within this paper’s framework, these data point toward a conclusion that democratic theory is reluctant to face: autocracy is not a betrayal of human freedom — it is the precise satisfaction of human biological instinct. The core product that a dictator provides is not policy, economic growth, or even security — it is certainty. In a species whose brain automatically encodes uncertainty as an existential threat, the “supplier of certainty” will never be out of work. What most people crave is not freedom but certainty. Freedom is a cognitive luxury; certainty is a cognitive necessity. When the two conflict, most people choose certainty.

7.2 The Historical-Evolutionary Genealogy of Cultural Hegemony

From Gramsci to the Frankfurt School to Marcuse’s “Repressive Tolerance” (1965) to the contemporary politics of discourse, the forms of cultural hegemony have been continuously evolving. Marcuse argued that freedom of speech and academic freedom are not equally distributed in society, and that these concepts are used by those in power to ensure their continued dominance within the existing power structure.

A key insight of this paper’s framework is that “counter-hegemony,” once successful, itself becomes the new hegemony — a new batch of faith producers replaces the old, a new batch of faith consumers replaces the old, but the asymmetric structure of benefit transfer remains entirely unchanged. New “organic intellectuals” replace the old priests, new “discursive correctness” replaces the old doctrine, new “cancellation” replaces the old “excommunication” — the bones still belong to the ten thousand, and the credit still belongs to the few.

7.3 The Illusory Truth Effect: The Operational Formula of Cultural Hegemony

Hasher et al. (1977) first confirmed the illusory truth effect in the laboratory: statements were rated as more truthful upon second and third presentation — even when they were objectively false. This has since been replicated in over 80 papers. The finding by Fazio et al. (2015) is even more disturbing: prior knowledge does not protect people from the illusory truth effect — even if you “know” something is false, hearing it repeatedly still makes it feel “more true.” Lacassagne et al. (2022) tested with extremely implausible statements and found that 53% of participants felt they were “less false” after repeated exposure.

A 2025 facial electromyography study revealed the underlying mechanism: repeated information triggers specific facial muscle responses — manifesting as increased positive affect and decreased cognitive effort — that predict participants’ subsequent truth judgments. Repetition bypasses logic, operating directly at the level of processing fluency.

Core opinion + infinite repetition = the operational formula of cultural hegemony. Built-in trap: correcting a lie requires repeating that lie — which only further entrenches it. Once a “core opinion” is successfully implanted and repeated at scale, it becomes virtually impossible to eradicate.

CHAPTER EIGHTForward-Looking Analysis: The Faith Market in an Age of Accelerating Change

8.1 The Disappearance of Constants and the Inflation of Variables

Alvin Toffler’s (1970) concept of “future shock” precisely describes the current reality: the speed of technological development outpaces the speed of human response. A generation ago, occupational skills could last a lifetime; today, the shelf life of skills has been compressed to a few years or even months. The rapid proliferation of AI technology simultaneously triggers pressures across five dimensions: techno-overload, techno-invasion, techno-complexity, techno-insecurity, and techno-uncertainty.

8.2 The Core Inequality and the Multiplicative Effect

The core inequality of this paper can be stated as: Total information (growing exponentially) >> Individual cognitive bandwidth (constant, ~4 chunks). The right side of the inequality cannot grow (fixed on an evolutionary timescale); the left side is accelerating. The gap is the volume of cognition that humans must “outsource” to opinion leaders.

Combined with the four-layer multiplicative model from Chapter 3, the effects in an age of accelerating change are further amplified: technological anxiety (psychological state layer compromised) + sleep-deprived modern lifestyle (biochemical layer compromised) + information overload (social context layer compromised) are taxing simultaneously. The multiplicative effect of three layers being simultaneously compromised means that effective cognitive bandwidth is declining at an accelerating rate — and this is happening precisely in an era that demands more cognitive resources to cope with complexity.

8.3 The Paradox of Faith Market Expansion

This leads to this paper’s most counterintuitive corollary: the more information there is, the more widespread education becomes, and the more advanced technology grows, the larger — not smaller — the faith market becomes. What is truly growing is not human cognitive capacity but the number and complexity of problems requiring cognition. The Enlightenment assumed knowledge could replace faith, but in reality the explosion of knowledge has only created a larger cognitive gap that requires more faith to fill.

New forms of “faith products” are emerging: algorithmic recommendations (deciding what you see), AI-generated “answers” (deciding what you believe), platform-curated “consensus” (deciding what is right). The packaging has changed from the church to the screen, but the underlying product — certainty — has never changed.

8.4 The Only Difference Between Opinion Leaders and Ordinary People

Human intelligence levels vary, but the behavior of “heeding others’ opinions” is uniformly distributed. Cross-cultural replications of the Milgram experiment across 11 countries produced remarkably consistent results (61–66%). The distribution of analytical ability is unequal (normal or power-law), but the distribution of obedience tendency is nearly flat (universally high). The few can analyze better than the many — but nearly everyone is equally susceptible to obedience.

This means the distinction between opinion leaders and ordinary people is not cognitive ability or moral standing but the radius of influence. A person speaking to 1 person is a friend; to 100, a teacher; to 100,000, an opinion leader; to 100 million, a cult leader or dictator. What is being said may be exactly the same — what changes is not the content but the coverage area.

Specifically: (1) a vertical throughline model from neurons to the history of civilization, integrating six previously separate disciplinary fields; (2) a domesticability spectrum model replacing binary judgment, incorporating ASD and psychopathy as boundary cases; (3) a four-layer multiplicative bandwidth model spanning hardware layer × biochemical layer × psychological state layer × social context layer; (4) a theoretical welding of Mullainathan & Shafir’s concept of “bandwidth” with Gramsci’s concept of “hegemony” — bandwidth limitations are the cognitive foundation on which hegemony operates, and hegemony is the institutionalized exploitation of bandwidth limitations.

9.4 Research Limitations and Future Directions

This framework has several limitations that must be honestly acknowledged. First, the framework’s unidirectionality emphasizes human passivity and manipulability, potentially giving insufficient weight to human agency, collective rationality, and the self-correcting mechanisms of democratic institutions. Second, the treatment of cultural differences is relatively simplified — the microdynamics of how belief operates within different cultural systems may contain important differences not yet fully accounted for. Third, although the four-layer multiplicative model possesses explanatory power at the qualitative level, it still lacks rigorous quantitative validation.

Future research could proceed along the following directions: empirical studies of AI as a new type of “cognitive anchor supplier”; cross-cultural comparisons of the gut-brain axis and susceptibility to faith; the reshaping effects of digital platform algorithms on the structure of the faith market; individual difference mechanisms in uncertainty tolerance at the neuroscience level; and quantitative validation and parameter estimation for the four-layer multiplicative model.
